A.V.R., Santa Clara, Calif. The college financial aid office should be your first: stop, but you're wise to search on your own, too every dollar helps as you'll see by glancing at this year's costs: Living at home while attending a two-year college is the least expensive, between $2,000 and $4,000 for a nine. month period.

Home living and a four-year public. college will total about away from home living adds another $500. A resident student at a private col-: lege can expect to spend from $4,000 to $8,000. Scarey, isn't it? Not only will you need to chase after scholarships. relentlessly, but most likely you'll have to get a part-time job, and perhaps hock the whites of your eyes in loans.

If you're a newcomer to: the aid maze, it's especially important that you use only up-to-date materials in your search. Here are several of the best: (1) Most aid comes from federal and state governments. A useful book that outlines these programs is: "Financial Aid Guide for College" by Elizabeth Suchar (Simon Schuster, 1977, (2) In your hunt for non-school controlled funding alternatives, see "Scholarships, Fellowships and Loans, Volume VI" by S. Do you think it's important to a woman's career to learn typing? My mother insists on it, but she is a secretary and I do not intend to do office work.

I'm not sure what my career will be after I finish college, but know that whatever do, it won't require sitting at a typewriter all day. J.S., Bellevue, Wash. (1) Typing is not a career imperative for most kinds of iobs. (2) One who hasn't zeroed in on life goals male or female should learn to type as a backstop. (3) Typing is one of those practical skills you may: desperately wish you had someday, even in an administrative position, but typing CAN mouse-trap women managers.

Addressing the last point, Sharie Crain, an International Harvester Co. executive, says women certainly should complain when their male manager peers have an office and secretary, but they have only an office and a typewriter. In her new book, "Taking Stock: A Woman's Guide to Corporate Success" (published by Henry Regnery Chicago), Crain advises newly-hired women execu-. tives to act immediately when a typewriter is wheeled in: "Go to your boss and tell him that if the company had been looking for a typist when they hired you. they wouldn't have given you the job because your typing is lousy.

Tell him it would be a waste of your higher -priced time to do something badly that a lowerpaid secretary could do better. "Tell him that the company has so few women in: management you have a real problem in convincing others that you really have management responsibility. Tell him you won't be really effective until you have accepted into the management role, and that doingyour own typing will make it more difficult for you to reach that point. Tell him you are sure he will see the company's interests will be better served if you share the privileges of your male peers and obviously have equal status." Watch it, though, Crain advises, if other management people do their own typing. You may win the battle and lose the war if your work isn't getting out and you start hassling the too-few secretaries.

Your slow performance and office rioting may result in your involuntary departure. On balance, learn to type. You can decide later if using your typing skills is to your advantage. Typing can be useful in your personal life too; for instance, I could hardly read your handwriting. Send career questions for this column to Joyce Lain Kennedy, P.O.
