What is the best server hardware for Proxmox? ›

At the moment, I will use ~10 TB used storage. The New System will have 512 GB RAM in each Node and 64 GB RAM in Backup Server. For Ceph and ZFS, additional memory is required; approximately 1GB of memory for every TB of used storage.

Starting with Proxmox VE 3.4, the native Linux kernel port of the ZFS file system is introduced as optional file system and also as an additional selection for the root file system. There is no need for manually compile ZFS modules - all packages are included.

There are two additional things to consider. ZFS uses RAM mostly for aggressive caching to cover over both spinning disks and the iops tradeoff vdevs make over traditional raid arrays. Thus low memory is not such a big deal if you have a pool with a single SSD or NVMe device.

Proxmox VE supports various authentication backends (Realm), and you can select the language here. The GUI is translated to more than 20 languages. You can save the user name on the client side by selecting the checkbox at the bottom. This saves some typing when you login next time.

X570(S) has the best IOMMU groups (and can often passthrough at least 3 GPUs) and X470/X370 usually has two PCIe slots (and a M. 2) for passthrough. Other AM4 chipsets can only passthrough one PCIe slot and one M. 2 slot.

ZFS depends heavily on memory, so you need at least 8GB to start. In practice, use as much as you can get for your hardware/budget. To prevent data corruption, we recommend the use of high quality ECC RAM. If you use a dedicated cache and/or log disk, you should use an enterprise class SSD.

For optimal performance, Proxmox recommends using VirtIO SCSI as the preferred bus type.
