GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Throughout the month of June, people celebrate Pride month with festivals, parades and events.

The first Pride march was held in New York City on June 28, 1970. It marked a year since the Stonewall Riots began, where bar patrons and residents clashed with police after a raid at a gay club. Since then, parades, marches and other festivities are held all through June. In 2000, President Bill Clinton officially designated June as Gay and Lesbian Pride month. In 2009, President Barack Obama renamed it Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride month.
