South Dakota Republicans’ tug-of-war over their party identity continues in Tuesday’s election, with district-level primaries the main event

  • By LEAH ASKARINAM - Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — South Dakota Republicans’ tug-of-war over their party identity continues in Tuesday’s election, with district-level primaries the main event.

South Dakota may be best known for Republican Gov. Kristi Noem’s no-apologies approach to politics, earning her the favor of former President Donald Trump, but her brand hasn’t extended to the entire state party. Sen. John Thune, whose name is regularly tossed around as the next Republican Senate leader, won election to a fourth term in 2022 without an endorsem*nt from Trump. When Sen. Mike Rounds said that Trump lost the 2020 election, the former president called him a “jerk.” Meanwhile, Rep. Dusty Johnson, the state’s lone representative in the U.S. House, is chair of the Main Street Caucus, whose members describe themselves as “pragmatic conservatives.”

President Milei's surprising devotion to Judaism and Israel provokes tension in Argentina and beyond

  • By ISABEL DEBRE and ALMUDENA CALATRAVA - Associated Press

President Javier Milei of Argentina, who owns four clones of his dead dog Conan, has never been the most conventional occupant of Argentina’s highest office. Even so, his passion for Judaism has stood out. Seeking common ground between his vision of radical libertarianism and the prophecy of the Torah, Milei’s interest in Judaism morphed into a religious practice. Breaking decades of policy precedent, Milei has also gone further in his support of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government than any other world leader as Israel faces growing isolation over its campaign in Gaza. But Milei’s stance has generated fears and exposed fissures within Latin America's biggest Jewish community and sparked diplomatic rows with Argentina's left-wing neighbors.

Jury selection is beginning in gun case against President Joe Biden's son

  • By RANDALL CHASE, CLAUDIA LAUER, MICHAEL KUNZELMAN and COLLEEN LONG - Associated Press

Jury selection is set to begin this week in the federal gun case against President Joe Biden’s son after a deal with prosecutors fell apart that would have avoided the spectacle of a trial so close to the 2024 election. Hunter Biden has been charged with lying on federal gun-purchase forms when he said he wasn’t a drug addict. He has pleaded not guilty and has argued he’s being unfairly targeted by his father’s Justice Department, after Republicans decried the now-defunct deal as special treatment. Hunter Biden is also facing a separate trial in California in September on charges of failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes.

Southwest Airlines is back in court over firing of flight attendant with anti-abortion views

  • By KEVIN MCGILL - Associated Press

Southwest Airlines is going back to federal court in hopes of reversing an $800,000 award to a flight attendant who says she was fired for her anti-abortion views. The airline also will seek to reverse a judge’s related order that Southwest lawyers must take religious liberty training from a conservative Christian legal group. Arguments are scheduled to be heard Friday by a federal appeals court in New Orleans. Southwest says the flight attendant was fired because she violated company rules requiring civility in the workplace. The airline says she sent “hostile and graphic” anti-abortion messages to a fellow employee. Her lawyers say Southwest violated federal law shielding employees from religious-based discrimination.

Stock market today: Asian shares start June with big gains following Wall St rally

  • By ELAINE KURTENBACH - AP Business Writer

Shares in Asia have started June with big gains after Wall Street finished with another push higher. Hong Kong's Hang Seng led with a 2.7% gain. On Friday, the S&P 500 rose 0.8% to close its sixth winning month in the last seven. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped nearly 575 points, or 1.5%, while sagging prices for some big technology stocks held back the Nasdaq composite. It slipped by less than 0.1%. Treasury yields eased in the bond market after data showed the Federal Reserve's preferred measure for inflation held steady last month. That kept alive hopes for coming cuts to interest rates.

Oilers top Stars 2-1 for West title, will play Florida in the Stanley Cup Final

Connor McDavid had a goal and an assist in the opening period to get Edmonton going, Stuart Skinner stopped 34 shots for his hometown team and the Oilers capped an improbable run to the Stanley Cup Final by beating the Dallas Stars 2-1 on Sunday night.
